Weekend pirate loggings: 4/26-4/28/15

Weekend pirate loggings: 4/26-4/28/15

Made it back home to a bunch of pirates on the air, but unfortunately I missed KVPH again and also WPIG. Wonder if WPIG is in any way related to the WPIG from the '90s?

Radio Free Whatever: 6940U, 4/26, 0149-0156* Girlpool "Blah Blah Blah" Mentioned X-FM: "I'm sure you want to go listen to him, not me" "I'm kinda like the president of Hair Club for Men . . . I'm not only the president, but I'm a client of pirate radio." Mentioned stations he enjoyed listening to & haven't been around lately: MAC, Undercover Radio, Blue Ocean Radio . . . " "I'm going to try to listen to X-FM when I'm done here"

unid: 6951, 4/26, 0145+ Noted this station in passing while checking what was on 6965, but disappeared when I was heading back through

X-FM: 6965, 4/26, 0144+ I think this is the 1st time that I caught it, but heard while running the canned "stay tuned for X-FM" IDs. Will tune back to it in a bit, but I'm still finding other stations! Just checked the Twente receiver in NE Holland & signal is barely audible there!

Captain Morgan SW: 6924.2, 4/26, 0159-0244* The Who "Who Are You?" Lou Reed "Walk on the Wild Side" Stones "Jumping Jack Flash" Bowie "Let's Dance." Big signal, like almost everyone else I've been hearing tonight. Twilight Zone theme a few times, which can only mean one thing. Just checked the Twente receiver in NE Holland & signal is very audible there!

unid: 6924.6, 4/26, 0244-0254* Hearing someone here with music immediately after Captain Morgan signed off. Weak. Air raid sirens at 0249 & again later. Thought I heard a bit of "Green Onions" by Booker T & The MGs

WPIG: 6925U, 4/26, 0254+ Weak, but I heard a few clear IDs. Sounds like a phone call. Not sure if this is a recording of the '90s WPIG, but it does sound like it is now. Now singing some songs about WPIG

Radio Free Whatever: 6849, 4/26, 0323+ The Hives "Main Offender" Signal's pretty good, but the audio is overdriven

Radio Casablanca: 6940, 4/26, 1336+ Fair with big band music, computer ID, & a clip from the movie Casablanca."Stormy Weather" "Dancing Cheek to Cheek"

The Crystal Ship: 6876, 4/27, 0145+ Excellent signal with '70s Jukebox Program. Heart "Magic Man" Donner Pass Cafe ad

Old-Time Radio unid: 6770, 4/27, 0200+ Good signal with Abbott & Costello.

Weekend Loggings: 3/27/15-3/30/15

Weekend Loggings: 3/27/15-3/30/15

0-60 Degrees Radio from Europe was testing in the afternoon on 21750 kHz LSB & 15880 kHz LSB, but unfortunately I missed the first & couldn't hear a trace of the station on latter frequency.

Old-Time Radio unid: 6770, 3/28, 2055+ Sgt. Preston program Quaker Puffed Wheat/Rice ad with promo for Yukon Trail buildings on the boxes, Boy Scouts ad. Quaker Oats oatmeal ad, ABC ID. The Six Shooter, NBC promo

Pesky Party Radio: 6950U, 3/29, Details to come

X-FM: 6965, 3/29, Details to come

The Crystal Ship: 6876, 3/29, *2312-0142* Tuned in to 4 min. of dead air with full quieting. On with Jefferson Airplane "Someone to Love" then "Age of Aquarius." TCS "Flower Power" show announced. "San Francisco," "Along Comes Mary." Sudden off near the end of "Hungry for a Good Thing." Fantastic signal during entire show.

Radio Free Mars: 6924.4, 3/30, 0126+ David Bowie "Major Tom" news clip about someone having trouble making bail, back to "Major Tom." Pretty good signal, but some fades and pescadore QRM. It's been a few years since I've heard RF Mars, so great to hear again!

via Twente web receiver

Radio Caroline: 6290.52, 3/27, 1640+ SINPO: 35544. Lots of jingles, some classical and pop music. It sounds like it might be into news in German because male and female announcers are alternating talking. E-mail address announced a few times. BTW, this is a tribute station to Caroline.

I received this eQSL because I wrote a note to the op, letting him know that I was listening in on the web receiver. He said the station was using 40 watts from the Czech Republic. I guess that was a decent catch from a receiver in Holland, at least at that power and signal level.

Weekend Logs: 5/31-6/2/14

Weekend Logs: 5/31-6/2/14

Old-Time Radio unid: 6771.4, 5/31, 1145+ Tuned into EZL music. Peaking up to S9+10. Seems to have drifted up a few hundred Hz in the past few days. Muzak cover of the day at 1153: "Somewhere over the Rainbow." 2139: Still EZL music, still a good signal. 2145: Station off mid-song.

unid: 6876.1, 5/31, 1148 Carrier only here. Might just be a utility, but it might be worth mentioning

unid: 6865.7, 5/31, 1148 Carrier only here. Might just be a utility, but it might be worth mentioning

X-FM: 6940, 6/1, 0230+ DJ Redhat with a long talk mentioning high-powered pirates (I think he said that one station would raise the hair on the back of your neck when you drove by the transmitter of the station when it was on the air) and that XFM is an alternative rock station. Asking for music requests and reception reports. Lots of noise on the band tonight. Lots of of shoutouts to listeners who reported on the message boards & also to those who e-mailed. Think he mentioned he's had some transmitter problems. Dire Straits "Sultans of Swing" The Cars "Take What You Want"

Liquid Radio: 6925.2, 6/1, 0230+ Carrier and not much audio here in loads of QSB. ID per HFU

YHWH: 6890, 6/1, 0340+ Tuned in on my way down to check on the OTR unid. Carrier, but just a bit of audio present. Listened for a min or two. Checked HFU afterward & saw that it was YHWH. Am tuned back in at 0348 and am just hearing bits of audio. The 21-MHz signals have been much, much better here

Old-Time Radio unid: 6771.4, 6/1, 0340+ OTR: I think this show is A Day in the Life of Dennis Day. Dennis thinks he's dead because city hall's records show that he is. 1156+ More Muzak. FSN news with Rebecca Foster at 1200: murder in India, new head of VA affairs, Ukraine's unpaid gas bills to Russia, Boston Marathon bombing obstruction-of-justice case. Muzak cover of the day: "Music Box Dancer."

My weekend logs: 2/21-2/24/14

Undercover Radio: 6925U, 2/22, 0300-0351* Dr. Benway with prerecorded programs and live shoutouts to listeners. Talk about the new t-shirts and helping Wounded Warriors. Into QSO with Redhat (X-FM) and Blues Traveler. I've never heard the latter. If Blues Traveler is reading this, I recorded the QSO at the end and can send an MP3, if you'd like.

Blues Traveler: 6925U, 2/22, *0400-0406* Blues Traveler thanks Dr. Benway again, then starts playing Gerry Rafferty "Baker Street." Presumably, this is still Blues Traveler. Not sure if that's the name of the op or the station. I guess Dr. Benway inspired someone else to give pirate radio a shot. Fair signal here & the audio sounds good. Off with "Man, I appreciate everything you do for the Wounded Warriors. God Bless." Please QSL?

Red Mercury Labs: 6925U, 2/22, 0407-0414* I just left the radio on after Blues Traveler and I can hear faint music underneath. Maybe Emerson, Lake, & Palmer? I think I'm hearing keyboards along those lines. Talk at 0414, but really weak. According to Bowman1 on HFU, this was actually Red Mercury Labs playing Doors "Riders on the Storm." Ha!

Unid: 6925U, 2/22, *0419+ "Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald." Nice signal & audio, but off with no IDs.

Cool AM: 6925, 2/24, 2304+ Turtles "Happy Together," Blue Brothers "Soul Man" etc. I'd probably call this good/fair signalwise.

My weekend loggings: 2/15-2/17/14

WRR: 6925U, 2/14, ca2230+ Tuned in, but had to leave, so I hit Record. Layers of pescador QRM here, with WRR somewhere near the top. Easy to pick out the old country music, but tough to copy when he went to talking because everyone was talking at the same time. Copied a Radio Totse SSTV during the broadcast.

Unid: 6867, 2/15, 1433-1441* Devo "Praying Hands," "Shrivel Up," & "Strange Pursuit." Static crashes, but pretty nice signal here. Off with no IDs. Maybe a homebrew transmitter test? If so, the audio sounded great here.

Unid (but Cool AM relay per HFU): 6924.5, 2/15, 1645 I was trying to save some of the accumulation of unsaved pirate recordings currently on the recording laptop when I turned the R-5000 back on & had a carrier near 6925. I punched in a few freqs to try to get it more accurate (the tuning knob is frozen on my R-5000) and the signal disappeared. Per Chris Smolinski on HFU, it was Cool AM.

Cool AM relay: 6925, 2/15, 2027 Here with Golden Earring "Twilight Zone" at 2027. Clear ID at 2035. Fair signal

Heat Man Radio: 6935U, 2/15, 2255+ Good signal with Velvet Underground, into song "Television will Not Be Revolutionized," computer music & now SSTV

CYOT: 6960, 2/15, 2255 Don't have much here aside from the carrier. ID from logs on HFU

WEAK Radio: 6925U, 2/15-16, 2338+ Pretty good signal with music. Clear computer-voiced IDs from when the station was on regularly five years ago. Kraftwerk "Pocket Calculator" and more. Great to hear WEAK back on the 3rd anniversary of its raid!"Sweet Home Alabama," Minor Threat "Small Man, Big Mouth"--interesting mix

Radio Free Whatever: 6925U, 2/16, 0105-0206+ Sign on with USSR national anthem, Dickweed & Stephen talking about progress with the t-shirt campaign. Super signal here. Reel Big Fish "Sell Out" and more

X-FM: 6925, 2/16 Tuned in during Queen "Bohemian Rhapsody"Good signal

Bangalore Poacher: 6925U, 2/16, 2026+ Numbers station parody with an Indian-sounding numbers announcer. fair signal

Undercover Radio: 6925U, 2/16, ca2340+ Incredible signal, with stories about Dr. Benway's 1st broadcast in 1977, setting his Viking II on fire. Into old shows, such as New Year's 2003/2004, etc. More than 30 people logged this one on HFU, and it was well heard in Europe!

My New Year's Eve/New Year's Day Loggings 12/31/13-1/2/13

Radio GaGa: 6925U, 2254 Playing Barnes & Barnes "Fishheads" ELP "Lucky Man" etc. "Live from Zipper Lake" ID

Unidentified: 6955, 2309+ All percussion, no IDs heard yet. Nice signal here with deep fading

I made the mistake of eating supper and a bunch of stations were on the air, according to logs on the HFU: CCC Radio, NSDAP Radio, and WBOG + an unidentified station or two. My guess is that NSDAP Radio was either some programming aired by CCC Radio or was a different show aired by the same pirate. CCC Radio was KKK-related station that made a couple of broadcasts in the '90s, long after the Voice of Tomorrow had stopped. I never heard the station, but The ACE printed one of their QSLs.

Wolverine Radio: 6950U, 1/1,  0030+ Beautiful signal. Was listening while digging through '90s ACEs, trying to find any logs of CCC Radio (still no luck).

Radio Free Whatever: 6925, 1/1, 0130 Playing "Indians" by Anthrax.

Radio Celestial: 1710, 1/1, 0200 Driving around in the car for a while and heard zilch for a few min. Then got to one spot and could hear Spanish-language contemporary Christian music, so I assume it was them. This immediately faded into what I assume was the NJ TIS, with a promo on getting flu shots. Typical telephonic audio. Best I've ever heard the TIS. Could hear co-channel splatter here, so I assumed it was from 1700 kHz. But then I got home & saw that Undercover Radio was on 1720, so maybe that's where the splatter's coming from. Unfortunately, the MW band is really buzzy here, so I can't really hear anything...and my car stereo only goes up to 1710 kHz.

Fake Numbers Station: 6925, 1/1, 0205+ English numbers

Unid: 6925U, 1/1, 0645+ Tuned in to some music & hit Record

X-FM: 6960, 1/1, 0645+ Still on the air. Fair signal

Radio Plate Current: 6925U, 1/1, 0700+ A lot of electronic dance music with two DJs. Long periods of talking & announced an e-mail address a few times and with phonetics. Announced the e-mail "because we're in the 21st century." Just sent an e-mail to see if I copied the address correctly. If I get it, I'll list it here, but I don't want to post incorrect info if I can possibly avoid it.

Pirate Logs 11/2

Well, going to a football game took precedence over pirate DXing tonight, but evidently Redhat telepathically knew that I was disappointed that I missed most of his show last night because he's on right now:

X-FM: 6950 kHz, 0236+ Redhat DJing live and announcing the e-mail address for reports and requests. Mostly album rock tonight with "Radar Love" and "When the Bullet Hits the Bone" by Golden Earring and now Robert Plant "Lead Me On." Nice signal here again. Wall of Voodoo "Mexican Radio" (I still haven't gotten tired of hearing that one on pirate stations). Someone requested Dead Milkmen "Peter Bazooka," but this really isn't fitting in too well with the format tonight...this was followed by Toto "Africa"

Red Mercury Labs: 6936.66 kHz USB, 0400+ Playing Judas Priest & telling a story about how he borrowed a cassette of Judas Priest (the "Electric Eye" album, maybe?) and how he played it over & over. Also some talk about cassettes and when you did the wrong combination of rewinding and fast forwarding, the tape would miswind and cause the tape to just stop.

And speaking of metal, I received a QSL for a show from last night. I have a bunch of reports to send out, but it was nice to receive this eQSL already.
